His son, Rockson Gracie, died of a drug overdose in New York at the age of 19. Just be with what you are going through and embrace it. Rickson’s book is a great reminder to breathe. Rickson, who is Royce’s half-brother, competed in Vale Tudo, and Pride - winning both competitions in the mid 1990s, whereas Royce was cruising to victories in the UFC. Hélio regularly dated multiple women and mated with them to hopefully have exclusively boys so that he could grow the size of his army of BJJ practitioners. He was born into a very competitive environment in Brazil where his father, Hélio Gracie, was a popular fighter. Having brothers enabled me to practice the art of grappling from a very early age which gave me insight into the type of fiercely competitive life that Rickson used to lead. I was amazed at how a thin guy like Royce could take down much bigger men and submit them with neck and arm holds. The thrill of the fight drew me in like basketball, football, and soccer never could.

I remember watching Royce Gracie compete in the UFC in 1993 when it first appeared on television when I was ten years old.

Rickson’s life is a blueprint for how to be resilient and that is achieved by strengthening your mind, body, and spirit. If you want to know more you can check out go watch some videos, or read more about my own jiu-jitsu journey.I really enjoyed reading this book. The Adaptive Jiu-Jitsu community is a great group of people, and we are always willing to give advice or help. If I can’t help you personally, I probably know someone who can. If you are wheelchair bound, paralyzed, an amputee, or have any other mobility limitation I can help you start your Jiu-Jitsu journey to better health of both your mind and body. I don’t always win the gold, but I am still training and competing well in my 40’s! I have trained and competed throughout the eastern United States, including New York City, Washington DC, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Florida, and Illinois. I have trained in some form of grappling most of my life, wrestling in grade school and then high school, training in Nihon Ryu Jiu-Jitsu before I lost my limbs, and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu after I lost my legs. Helio Gracie built his style of self defense so the weaker or smaller person, women, and even disabled persons could still effectively train and learn proper self defense. See Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone, not just muscled up athletic types, but the average person as well.

Maybe you’re not here because of my writings, but want to find out more about training adaptive Jiu-Jitsu. ‘Souls’ is based in a much larger universe I have taken to calling The Thrown Down World, a place that looks just like our world on the surface, but just underneath you will find it filled with supernatural creatures ready to steal your soul and take over the world! My current work in progress is The Souls In Between, an urban fantasy based around angels, demons, and of course my favorite thing, Jiu-Jitsu. While it’s great that so many people have gotten something out of my story, many don’t realize that I am also an author of fiction and fantasy as well. “This book will give you the strength and determination to achieve your goals and put your whole life in perspective.” Life has a way of kicking us all but it is the ones that make the decision to overcome ( as you will read in this book) that are to be lifted up!”

“Reading about his fight and will to live is to be admired and celebrated. “This man has the greatest outlook on life.” I have gotten great reviews and positive feedback, which really keeps me going! Most people know me from my Amazon Bestselling autobiography ‘ STAND TOUGH‘ and that’s awesome.
